I had my neighbour come over for drumming lessons this evening. I never know what to expect from my students but I always know I enjoy it and I haven’t fail so far. She was attentive, responsive and patient. It did help she had natural ability which helps, but most of all there has to be a will and a passion to learn.

So now I have two people I am teaching; a photographer and a drummer. I love it. There is no down side! I get to talk about the subjects I enjoy, I get to teach and watch them grow and there is the hope that one day the will outgrow the teacher and become something which they never expected because of me. I guess this is what parenting is like.

For people who are good at their profession, I seriously recommend teaching someone. Without doubt the student has to be willing to learn without pride, has no ego and essentially have a strong passion. What you get in return is something amazing. I get a real joy and feeling of pride.

So to my drummer, I salute you. You have an ability which I want to harness further to your full potential. Remember… 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, crash, 2, 3, 4!
