Photographing music gigs with Pocket Wizards

Last night was my first opportunity to shoot with my new Pocket Wizards and boy did I learn alot. Placement, aperture and power had to be adjusted, but because I had limited setup time on the stage I was not satisfied with the setup. I’ve been going through the shots in Adobe Lightroom, and there are a few I liked. More photos to come soon.

The Bad Cats. A Wedding/Cover band.

While I was photographing a wedding in Wales I happend across the band called the Bad Cats. They are a talented bunch of lads from Manchester. Even though I was photographing a Wedding, I spared a few minutes to capture the band playing, after all, what kind of Gig Photographer would I be if I didn’t take a few shots?
I wouldn’t normally post cover bands (NBS is the only other exception), but I thought why not! It’s the last band I’ll shoot in 2009 and it has been a damn …

NBS perform at The Aristocrat, Aylesbury.

NBS asked gigphotographer to photograph their band when they came to play in Aylesbury.  They specifically wanted some posed shots and some ‘caught in the action’ shots in their two sets.
I had heard them play once before, and to say that my ears enjoyed it would probably sum it up pretty well! My ears were ringing for AGES after the gig! Yes….I should invest in some ear plugs.
This time round, I was excited to see a full set and again, it was very pleasing! They pounded out the first song …

Pete Edwards, the front man of The Red Bullets.

It is the opinion of this Photographer (and it is only an opinion) that every band lives and dies with their front man; Aerosmith needs Steve Tyler, Foo Fighters needs Dave Grohl and The Red Bullets need Pete Edwards. Pete has to bare the weight as the voice of the Bullets so his stage performance is equally as important as his vocals.
Unlike most front men, Pete is behind a keyboard which is in a seated position. This means he is physically limited to how he can perform on stage, but …

BBC review Bon Jovi’s The Circle

I have been a long time Bon Jovi fan. I know for a fact there are millions of other Bon Jovi fans out there; I’ve been to two of their gigs and you guys are wild in your masses!
I will review Bon Jovi’s album cover very soon, in the meantime the BBC have given a fair assessment of their new collection. I say “fair” because the reviewer clearly isn’t a Bon Jovi fan but at least the reviewer Tom Hocknell remains neutral.

Mark Wheeler. The Red Bullet’s very own Bass extraordinaire.

In the first part in GigPhotographer’s RED BULLETS week, these are the exclusive photos of the Bass player Mark Wheeler.
Mark Wheeler (Wheeler to his friends) is the band’s steady underlying beat on bass guitar. He has the typical stance that bass players have, with that added ‘something’ that you know is different and special but you just can’t put your finger on it.
Taking to the centre of the stage, he occupied it gloriously with the lead guitarist and lead vocals on keyboard maneuvering around him. He has some regular poses, …

Last night was simply one of the best performances I have seen from the Buckinghamshire lads. The official photos will be uploaded very soon, in the meantime this is a little shot I took with my iPhone.

The Echoes at the Nag’s Heads, High Wycombe. Terry’s shots.

What can I say that Kelly hasn’t already covered. They were the surprise performance of the evening. A great set and a great sound!
These are my shots. We took so many of them we had to seperate the photos into two posts

Gig at Nags Head, High Wycombe

Through a series of random events, Kelly and I went to a small gig containing 3 bands last night. One of the bands, The AnyDays, I had already met and interviewed before so it was on that basis we went. The other two acts, FutureTown, The Echoes and the venue itself were completely new to us.
[cut to the chase] – Although the attendance was low, the 3 bands rocked it out. By the time The AnyDays had completed their first song, our ears were ringing! I’m just downloading the files …
