Photographing music gigs with Pocket Wizards

Last night was my first opportunity to shoot with my new Pocket Wizards and boy did I learn alot. Placement, aperture and power had to be adjusted, but because I had limited setup time on the stage I was not satisfied with the setup. I’ve been going through the shots in Adobe Lightroom, and there are a few I liked. More photos to come soon.

NBS perform at The Aristocrat, Aylesbury.

NBS asked gigphotographer to photograph their band when they came to play in Aylesbury.  They specifically wanted some posed shots and some ‘caught in the action’ shots in their two sets.
I had heard them play once before, and to say that my ears enjoyed it would probably sum it up pretty well! My ears were ringing for AGES after the gig! Yes….I should invest in some ear plugs.
This time round, I was excited to see a full set and again, it was very pleasing! They pounded out the first song …

Slashed Seat Affair at the Albany, London

It was certainly a packed out venue for the launch of SSA’s EP; I could barely make my way to the front of the stage!
I did manage to though, and was blown away by the energetic, full bodied performance by the stunning Ellie on lead vocals, and the perfect combination of Darren, Noel and Rob who accompany her to make up this edgy JUST BEEN SIGNED band that we know by the name of Slashed Seat Affair!
Just a teaser for now, but come back to see more photos soon….

Nikon 14-24mm F/2.8

Update: new photos of the recent snowfall taking with this amazing wide angle lens. Click here to see it!
Forgive my indulgence, I wanted to write a quick post about my latest lens, the stunning Nikon 14-24mm F/2.8 ultra wide bad boy.
Even though I have had this amazing lens for some time now, I have not had the opportunity to use it as a proper gig. It has come out with me on a few weddings but even then I trust my Go-To lens more which is the Nikon 24-70 F2/8.  …

Most of you may not have heard of Slashed Seat Affair; to be honest I hadn’t until the summer of 2008 when this gorgeous band unassuming band played an awesome set that knocked me away!! I was shooting local Gigs in Aylesbury; I did a bit of homework by visiting their MySpace page before I went to the gig to see what Slashed Seat Affair were like. I immediately liked them but that didn’t prepare me for how they play live!
Fast forward a few months and they invite me to …

I’m having repeated conversations with several people who ask me what camera they should buy, and I keep telling them it’s not the camera…. it has always been about the lens!! In my collection I have the Nikon’s D300, D3 and my little baby D40x which is designed to be a budget travel DSLR.
In every possible way my new D3 is far superior to the D40x, however look at the following setup.

Nikon D3, 18-70mm F3.5-4.5
Nikon D40x, 24-70mm F2.8

Given the two options, I would MUCH prefer the D40x with the 24-70mm. …

Over the summer I’ve shot well over 30 bands in various venues. Over that time I felt the need to invest in new equipment, in this case a very specific lens. Previously I’ve been shooting with a 70-200mm F2.8 that has been great for 50% of general shots, but because I’ve been moving into gig photography I need a wider lens that allows me to get right to the front, but also give a broader scope in my photos; hence my purchase of the excellent Nikon 24-70 F2.8. I strongly …
