I was invited to photograph a local band’s recording session. I had been to the studio before so I knew what to expect from the lighting conditions; I made sure I packed my trusty SB-800 flash units. The 5 piece band Lightbox had already been setting up and recording for few hours by the time I had arrived.
I shot while they were recording which is always a creative process; the lads are concentrating on their music too much to notice me. They took a break to do some scenic shots …

Here’s some advice to those starting out in music photography.
My golden rule; be brave, be creative and take risks. This rule applies to all aspects. When I shoot, I am respectful to the band and the audience, but I have no problem being in a fan’s line of sight if I can get the great shoot I am always looking for.

Network and mingle at local gigs. Unless you have a really famous rock dad you won’t be photographing the Foo’s anytime soon so find local venues where unsigned bands are …

Ok, not the singer. This shot was completely random. We visited the church were she is getting married; I was scouting for good locations so I asked her to pose for framing purposes. This one worked brilliantly and at the risk of her killing me, I’m posting it here anyway

After the high energy of Slashed Seat Affair last week, I knew it would be a hard act to follow. I have not been disappointed with the acts so far however when Christina Tomlin (www.chrystinatomlin.com) came on I had an open mind.
The crowd took a while to warm up but Christina was a pro, dug in and sung her songs with passion. I was sold! I pointed my lens and searched for the killer shot. I admired Christina’s performance, she was selling it without being over the top. Sometimes in …

There is an advert on UK television that features Escala; 4 electro string musicians who came close to winning Britain’s Got Talent. I liked the track so I looked at their website, and being a photographer I was interested the stunning photos… but there were no stunning photos! Their gallery page is a mess of video grabs from their music video and tv appearances.
I’m thinking these girls probably have a short life span if they’re not marketed properly. Where are the tours, the interviews, theĀ  media coverage? But most of …

Based on a recommendation, I’ll borrowed a friend’s Pocketwizard for this evening’s gig. Basically, these devices triggers Flash units from your camera. My 2 SB-800s already have wireless trigger system built in but it isn’t always consistent and because the SB-800s are using Infra-Red as the transmission carrier then they need line of sight to be activated; this means if anything is blocking between camera and flash unit then it won’t fire. With the Pocket Wizards they are using radio frequencies so they should be more reliable. Initial tests have …

FUN FUN FUN!! I just knew this would be a great evening when a client asked me to document her grandparent’s 60th anniversary together. I’ll be posting photos as I edit them, but I just wanted to write how awesome my job is.
A very special thanks to Kelly who was my assistant photographer last night. She really helped by taking alot of the time pressure off me as I was only allowed 90 minutes to shoot over 30 specific shots the client needed me to take so while I was …

I’m really looking forward to this Saturday. I’ll be down the King’s Head again to photograph a band I discovered through my photography. They’re called Slashed Seat Affair which is a wonderfully trippy name! They look like they’re going places big with national airplay as well as working with the same producer who’s credit includes Snow Patrol, Velvet Revolver (who are ex Guns and Roses members), Seal and the Darkness.
I’ve included a video of one of their gigs below. Play it, it’s a great sound.

I will be posting my shots …

The second act was something I wasn’t prepared for. I’ll admit I have not been to many local music sessions so the soft Lisa Thuenissen was something I was expecting. When The Swamis came out they were loud, fast, powerful and made me stop and go “YEEEEEAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!”
Absolutely commited rock. As well as the sound I was very impressed with their pressence and performance; for such a small venue they really rocked it out; the crowd was immediately behind them. Now remember Aylesbury is just know for it’s Ducks so three …
